Pakistan Suki Kinari Hydropower Project

Pakistan Suki Kinari Hydropower Project

Pakistan Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Project is undertaken by YREC for project management and engineering consulting services, which is a benchmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The Project is a diversion-type underground power station. The headrace tunnel is 22.62 km long and the maximum head is 922.72 m. Four impulse turbine generating units are installed with unit capacity of 221 MW, and the total installed capacity is about 884 MW. The main structures include: asphalt concrete core rockfill dam, spillway, headrace tunnel, surge shaft, pressure shaft, underground powerhouse, main transformer chamber, tailrace tunnel, powerhouse access tunnel, switchyard, cable outlet tunnel, N15 rerouted road, on-site highway and Employer’s permanent camp.

The geological conditions of the site area are very complex, including MBT fault zone and meizoseismal area, and the underground powerhouse is situated in large burial depth. The key challenges involve deep and thick dam foundation overburden, deep buried long tunnel, ultra-deep pressure shaft, and ultra-high head, and large-capacity impulse turbine units. YREC together with its partners constituted a JV to provide engineering consulting services for the project. The Project started in December 2016, and the units are scheduled to be put into operation for power generation in December 2023.
