The inclined clay core rockfill dam has a height of 160 m. It is one of the key projects for water and sediment control under the Yellow River management plan, and also one of the most challenging projects in the history of dam engineering in the world. Major geological challenges involve regional structures, deep and thick overburden on the riverbed, red clastic rocks with clay intercalation, dam foundation and abutment leakage, high slopes and large-span cavern groups.
