Kaleta and Souapiti Hydropower Projects in Guinea

Kaleta Hydropower Project is located in the middle Konkoure River in Guinea, with installed capacity of 240 MW and annual power generation of 965 million kWh. In the year of starting operation, the overall image of the Project was featured on Guinea’s largest denomination currency, representing the socio-economic and historical significance of the Project to the country.

Souapiti Hydropower Project is located 6 km upstream of Kaleta. The total reservoir storage capacity is 7.489 billion m3, the installed capacity is 450 MW, and the annual power generation is 2.016 billion kWh. The RCC gravity dam has a height of 116.5 m, and an axial length of 1148 m. Currently, the Project ranks as the largest for dam height, storage capacity and installed capacity in West Africa.

YREC worked out an optimal joint scheduling scheme to realize regulation for the two power stations in complementarity of performance, and for stable power supply and increasing power generation. With the joint operation, the installed capacity of the two power stations accounts for about two thirds of the total of Guinea’s power system, and they have become key sources of power to ensure energy security and social development in Guinea, and in neighboring countries and regions.
