Hekoucun Reservoir Project is located on the tributary Qinhe of the Yellow River. In terms of eco-environment, the eco-corridor helps mitigate the impact of project construction on the macaque habitat; fish barrier facilities, and restocking and releasing stations are proposed to effectively protect the size of fish population in the river. Operations of Hekoucun Reservoir and Hekou Hydropower Station are coordinated ensure the ecological base flow in the downstream channel, which eliminates or mitigates the adverse impact on the surrounding ecology.

In the aspect of soil & water conservation, based on the concept of micro-terrain transformation, soil & water loss prevention and control measures are taken to make the construction harmonious with the natural environment, which is a new breakthrough in spoil recycling, soil & water conservation and environment beautifying. The soil & water conservation design of the Project is awarded the second prize of Excellent Design issued by Chinese Society of Soil and Water Conservation.
